We are developing new field models coestimating along with the core field the ionospheric and field aligned currents, with a focus on the polar regions. Below are shown preliminary results for an example calculation. Top is the core field and SV to degree 13, then an example of the magnetic field due to the co-estimated ionospheric (divergence-free) currents, and finally at the bottom Birkeland currents and the streamfunction for the divergence free currents in the polar region, for an example tilt angle. Work on this topic, and the possibility of seeing fast core field changes due to better parameterizing the ionospheric current is ongoing.
